So, I formatted the USB stick BEFORE opening universal USB installer, and NOT checked the 'format drive' option (checkbox) and it worked just fine. I tried 2 times, same error: Syslinux shows a warning, closes and say 'Won't be bootable'. Set ISO=/UBUNTU-18.04.3-DESKTOP-AMD64.ISO I've had the same problem with Ubuntu 12.04 desktop 64bits. My final menu.lst looked like this: # This Menu created with Universal USB Installer I also updated the ISO image filename in the root directory on the USB drive to be uppercase: \UBUNTU-18.04.3-DESKTOP-AMD64.ISOĪfter these changes were made, I rebooted via USB, and it worked. To remedy, I inserted the USB drive into my Windows PC, and navigated to the \boot\grub\menu.lst file, and edited it, changing all instances of: UBUNTU-18.04.3-DESKTOP-AMD64 ➜ UBUNTU-18.04.3-DESKTOP-AMD64 With some research, it seems that the CDFS file system is case sensitive. When I booted, I got the Error 15 message. I used the Universal USB Installer tool to burn the image (also see caveat). I had downloaded the Ubuntu ISO image (18.04.3 LTS), and the file name was in lowercase ( ubuntu-18.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso). I got this error when attempting to boot from a USB drive that had been set bootable, made with the Universal USB Installer. I'm a complete newbie at Linux/Ubuntu and would be grateful if anyone can provide a solution to this problem.For CDFS, make sure menu.lst case references are UPPERCASE So far all adivice boil down to copy grub loader to other locations, but it does not help. problem you could run into booting a fresh Linux boxinstalled from a USB. My problem is that I cannot boot from usb UEFI from computers which do not support option to choose EFI loader upon startup. ![]() I am somewhat certain (but not completely) that the Ubuntu OS installed perfectly and the problem cropped up only in the GRUB installation, since whenever I try to re-install, the setup wizard says that "this computer has Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on it" and gives the option to "Erase Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and re-install", which would only be possible if Ubuntu was already installed. The USB flash drive is just not showing up. I had read that GRUB bootloader must be installed to that partition. Inside this tool (Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.5.2.exe) I selected 'Try Unlisted Linux ISO'. I decided to see if I could unlock the EFI partition and try to remedy this problem. dev/sda1 is the EFI boot partition (ESP partition) on my HDD to which Windows Boot Manager is installed. Then select your USB target drive (where you want to install Kali). The installation starts smoothly but fails again and again with the message "unable to install GRUB on dev/sda1" and says that it is a "fatal error". I have disabled secure boot, fast boot and created suitable partitions on Windows already. I have set up a Ubuntu bootable USB drive and booted Ubuntu in UEFI mode from it. Using it will allow you to preserve any data you have in the USB drive. I'm installing Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on a Dell Inspiron 5559 with 1 TB HDD where WIndows 10 is already installed, hence it's a dual boot. EDIT: Actual error message: mount: /dev/sdb1 is already mounted or /run/install/tmpmnt0 busy Warning: Can't get kickstart from /dev/sdb1:/ks.cfg To test that the syntax was correct I placed the kickstart file on another USB stick and loaded the same command to grab ks.cfg from the new location: linux kshd:sdc1:/ks. UNetbootin is a graphical, bootable USB image creator.
